Spool guns themselves do not determine whether the welding current is AC or DC; they are simply tools for feeding wire during welding. The type of current—AC or DC—is set by the welding machine to which the spool gun is connected. Most spool guns are used with MIG welders, which typically use DC current, especially for welding aluminum.
