The four major types of wire feed systems are push, pull, push-pull, and spool-on-gun. Push systems use a drive motor to push the wire through the cable, pull systems use a motor at the gun to pull the wire, push-pull systems combine both methods, and spool-on-gun systems place the wire spool directly on the gun for short wire feeds.
