When wire feed welding, whether you push or pull depends on the weld you want. Pushing (angling the gun in the direction of travel) gives a flatter, wider bead with less penetration, while pulling (dragging the gun) produces deeper penetration and a narrower bead. Generally, pushing is preferred for cleaner welds and better visibility.
