Submerged arc welding (SAW) works by feeding a continuous wire electrode and covering the welding area with a layer of granular flux. An electric arc forms between the electrode and the workpiece beneath the flux, which melts the metal and protects it from contamination. The flux also helps to shape the weld and reduce spatter.
