308 stainless steel filler is generally preferred for welding stainless steel to stainless steel, especially when joining 304 or similar grades, as it provides good strength and corrosion resistance. 309 is typically used when welding dissimilar metals, such as stainless to mild steel, due to its higher alloy content and better crack resistance. So, for stainless-to-stainless joints, 308 is usually the better choice.
