You should use .030" welding wire for thinner materials, typically 24- to 18-gauge sheet metal, as it allows for better control and less heat input. Use .035" wire for slightly thicker materials, such as 16-gauge to 1/4" steel, because it provides more filler metal and higher deposition rates. Your choice depends on the thickness of the metal you're welding and the amperage range of your welder.
