About Lincoln Wearshield 60

E FeCr-A is an AWS A5.13 high-chromium-carbide iron-based hardfacing SMAW electrode that deposits a primary chromium carbide overlay in an austenite-carbide matrix (55-62 HRC as-welded) for the most severe metal-to-earth and metal-to-mineral abrasion service. The chromium carbide phase provides exceptional cutting-and-gouging abrasion resistance. Standard hardfacing for crusher rolls, augers, fan blades, sinter plants, and ash-handling equipment. The deposit cross-checks by design (stress-relief cracking). DC+ or AC, flat and horizontal preferred.

Questions about this package
Is this the same electrode as the parent Lincoln Wearshield 60 grade, just in a different package?

Yes. SKU ED022011 is the same AWS A5.13 EFeCr-A classification as every other size in the Lincoln Wearshield 60 family. The only difference is diameter (5/32 in) and package format (10 lb plastic tube). Polarity, position, and tensile properties are identical to the parent grade.

How many rods are in this 10 lb plastic tube?

Approximately ~29 rods. Exact count varies with manufacturing tolerance but a 10 lb plastic tube of 5/32 in Lincoln Wearshield 60 typically contains in this range.

What is the shelf life if I do not use them all?

Sealed containers store indefinitely in a dry environment. Hardfacing electrodes generally tolerate routine workshop humidity; if the coating becomes damp the rods can be redried at 200-300 F per manufacturer instructions before use.

What diameter should I use for common applications?

5/32 in is well-suited for production overlay and buildup on medium-to-large parts. Heavier base metal and higher deposition typically calls for one diameter up; thinner sheet and root passes go one diameter down. See the parent grade page for full diameter-to-amperage guidance.

Can I mix this size with other diameters on the same job?

Yes, provided your procedure qualification (WPS) covers the diameter range. Many shops use one diameter for root, one for fill, and one for cap. All sizes within Lincoln Wearshield 60 share identical mechanical properties (AWS A5.13 EFeCr-A) so weld metal chemistry is consistent across passes.

Do I need to rebake these after the can is opened?

Refer to the parent grade page and manufacturer data sheet for rebake requirements specific to this electrode classification.

Does this size require a special holder or stinger?

Use an electrode holder rated for the amperage range above (130-200 A). Most general-purpose stinger holders (e.g. 300-500 A class) handle 5/32 in Lincoln Wearshield 60 without issue. For sustained high-amperage runs on larger diameters, a 500 A or higher holder is recommended.

Is this Buy America compliant?

This specific SKU is not the Buy America variant. Lincoln Wearshield 60 may be available in a Buy America compliant version - see the parent grade page for all available compliance variants.

Note
⁽¹⁾ Preferred polarity is listed first.
NOTE: The deposit is not machinable or forgeable. Cooling rate does not significantly influence abrasion resistance. Deposit will usually cross check.
If more than two-layer build-up is required, use Wearshield® 15CrMn (preferred), Wearshield® BU or Wearshield® BU30 for the preliminary layer or layers under Wearshield® 60.
On manganese steel, use Wearshield® Mangjet® or Wearshield® 15CrMn as build-up.
Preheat is not generally necessary except to be sure that work is in room temperature range 25° - 45°C (75° - 100°F).
However, preheat of 120° - 200°C (250° - 400°F) may be necessary to prevent heat affected zone cracking on high carbon steel or low alloy steel base metals.
If more than two layers must be used, or if cross checks must be eliminated, preheat to 650°C (1200°F).
Prolonged or repeated heating of manganese steel base metal over 260°C (500°F) can cause embrittlement and spalling.
Avoid base metal embrittlement by: • Limiting the temperature 260°C (500°F) at distances of 13 mm (1/2 in) away from the weld. • Minimizing the time at elevated temperatures.
The correct welding technique is a vertical electrode with a 3.2 - 4.8 mm (1/8 - 3/16 in) arc length. The large ball on the end of the electrode should never touch the puddle. This technique will give a smooth transfer, low spatter and smooth bead.
