ECuNi is an AWS A5.6 copper-nickel SMAW electrode (~70 Cu / 30 Ni / UNS W60715) with 50 ksi minimum tensile, designed for welding 90/10 and 70/30 copper-nickel alloys (UNS C70600, C71500) used in marine seawater piping, heat exchangers, ship hulls, and offshore platforms. The deposit matches the seawater corrosion resistance and biofouling resistance of the cupronickel base. DC+ in flat and horizontal positions only; preheat 200-300 deg F on thicker sections.
Is this the same electrode as the parent Lincoln Tech Rod 187 grade, just in a different package?
Yes. SKU EL187093632 is the same AWS A5.6/A5.6M ECuNi classification as every other size in the Lincoln Tech Rod 187 family. The only difference is diameter (3/32 in) and package format (8 lb easy-open can). Polarity, position, and tensile properties are identical to the parent grade.
How many rods are in this 8 lb easy-open can?
Approximately ~68 rods. Exact count varies with manufacturing tolerance but a 8 lb easy-open can of 3/32 in Lincoln Tech Rod 187 typically contains in this range.
What is the shelf life if I do not use them all?
Sealed containers have an indefinite shelf life when stored in a dry environment. Follow the manufacturer storage instructions on the parent grade page for opened-container handling.
What diameter should I use for common applications?
3/32 in is well-suited for root passes, thin material, and out-of-position work. Heavier base metal and higher deposition typically calls for one diameter up; thinner sheet and root passes go one diameter down. See the parent grade page for full diameter-to-amperage guidance.
Can I mix this size with other diameters on the same job?
Yes, provided your procedure qualification (WPS) covers the diameter range. Many shops use one diameter for root, one for fill, and one for cap. All sizes within Lincoln Tech Rod 187 share identical mechanical properties (AWS A5.6/A5.6M ECuNi) so weld metal chemistry is consistent across passes.
Do I need to rebake these after the can is opened?
Refer to the parent grade page and manufacturer data sheet for rebake requirements specific to this electrode classification.
Does this size require a special holder or stinger?
Use an electrode holder rated for the amperage range above (50-80 A). Most general-purpose stinger holders (e.g. 300-500 A class) handle 3/32 in Lincoln Tech Rod 187 without issue. For sustained high-amperage runs on larger diameters, a 500 A or higher holder is recommended.
Is this Buy America compliant?
This specific SKU is not the Buy America variant. Lincoln Tech Rod 187 may be available in a Buy America compliant version - see the parent grade page for all available compliance variants.
