Both argon and helium use the same CGA 580 cylinder connection (right-hand threads, non-flammable inert gas), so mechanically the same regulator body fits both cylinders. However, flowmeters in combined regulator-flowmeter units are calibrated for a specific gas — a flowmeter calibrated for argon will under-read actual helium flow because helium is much lighter and flows faster at the same pressure. Use a flowmeter calibrated for helium, or apply the correction factor (approximately 1.4× for helium vs. argon) when using an argon-calibrated flowmeter.
What flow rates are typically needed for helium shielding gas compared to argon?
Because helium has lower density than argon, it provides less shielding efficiency per cubic foot per hour (CFH).
