What is MIG welding?
MIG welding — formally Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) — feeds a continuous solid wire electrode through the gun while shielding gas (75% argon / 25% CO₂ for mild steel, 100% argon for aluminum) protects the weld pool from contamination. It is the fastest, most operator-friendly arc process for production work on steel, stainless, and aluminum. What gas is used for MIG welding?
Shielding gas depends on base metal: 75% argon / 25% CO₂ (C25) for mild steel, 98% argon / 2% CO₂ or a tri-mix for stainless, and 100% argon for aluminum — CO₂ contamination causes porosity in aluminum welds. Self-shielded flux-cored wire needs no external gas. Flow rate runs 25–30 CFH on a torch flowmeter. Pair your machine with an argon regulator for accurate flow control.
Can you MIG weld aluminum?
Yes — aluminum MIG welding requires 100% argon shielding gas, ER4043 or ER5356 aluminum MIG wire, U-groove aluminum drive rolls, and a spool gun or push-pull torch, since soft aluminum wire bird-nests in standard gun cables longer than 8 feet. Pulsed MIG further reduces heat input and distortion on thin aluminum sheet.
