Frequently Asked Questions

What types of accessories are included in a welding turntable/positioner system?
Turntable positioner accessories include chucks and faceplates (for gripping the workpiece), T-slot tables and angle-iron fixtures (for clamping irregular shapes), tailstocks (to support long parts), drive motors and speed controllers, grounding cables and slip rings (for weld current transfer through the rotating table), and mounting hardware. Lincoln Electric's ANNEX positioner line includes accessories for their Dual Trunnion Turntable (AD2526), Headstock/Tailstock (AD2528), Drop Center (AD2529), and Compact Ferris Wheel (AD2487-1) positioners.
How do I ensure a good welding ground through a rotating positioner table?
Rotating tables require a dedicated slip ring or ground ring assembly to carry weld current from the stationary machine to the rotating workpiece without creating a stray current path through the bearings. Running the weld return cable through or around the bearings without a proper slip ring will damage the bearings over time. Always use the positioner manufacturer's specified grounding assembly, and verify the current rating of the slip ring matches your maximum welding amperage.
What load capacity should I look for in a turntable positioner for my shop?
Lincoln Electric's ANNEX positioner line covers a range: the table-top 250 lb. positioner (AD1043-86) handles light assemblies, while the floor-mounted 1,500 lb. positioner (AD1043-106) is suited for heavy weldments. Beyond rated load, also check the off-center (eccentric) load rating โ€” a 250 lb. rated table may only handle 50โ€“100 lbs when the weight is significantly off-center. Size for the heaviest part you will regularly run, not your average part.
Can turntable positioner accessories from one manufacturer be used with another brand's positioner?
Some accessories are universal (standard chuck jaw sets, T-bolts, strap clamps) while others are brand-specific (drive motor controllers, slip ring assemblies, mounting adapter plates). Lincoln ANNEX positioner accessories are designed for Lincoln ANNEX units and may not bolt directly onto other brands without custom adapters. For fixturing, standard 5C collet chucks and L-00 lathe chuck adapters can often be sourced from multiple suppliers if the center bore and bolt circle match.
What speed range does a welding positioner typically need, and how is rotation speed controlled?
Welding positioners for manual welding typically rotate at 0.1โ€“3 RPM to keep pace with the welder's travel speed. For a 12 in. diameter faceplate at 2 RPM, circumferential travel speed is roughly 75 in./min โ€” which covers most MIG and TIG applications. Speed is usually controlled by a variable-speed DC drive with a potentiometer dial or foot control. Robotic positioners run at higher speeds for part indexing but slower during the weld pass.
What is the difference between a two-axis (tilt-rotate) positioner and a simple flat turntable?
A simple turntable rotates the part on a single horizontal axis โ€” useful for circumferential welds on cylinders. A two-axis positioner adds a tilt axis, so you can tip the part to place every weld joint in the flat or horizontal position regardless of joint orientation. This is the key advantage of a headstock/tailstock or L-head positioner: it virtually eliminates out-of-position welding, improving weld quality and reducing operator skill requirements. Lincoln's ANNEX Z-Axis Headstock/Tailstock (AD2528) is a two-axis design.
