About Harris 316L Stainless

Harris 316L is an AWS A5.4 E316L austenitic stainless SMAW electrode with 75 ksi minimum tensile and ~18 Cr / 12 Ni / 2.5 Mo chemistry, designed for welding 316 and 316L stainless and other molybdenum-bearing austenitic grades in chloride and reducing-acid service. The L (low-carbon) designation limits carbon to 0.04% maximum to prevent intergranular corrosion in food, marine, dairy, chemical, and pharmaceutical equipment. Runs on AC or DC+ in all positions.

Questions about this package
Is this the same electrode as the parent Harris 316L Stainless grade, just in a different package?

Yes. SKU 316L650 is the same AWS A5.4/A5.4M E316L-15/-16/-17 classification as every other size in the Harris 316L Stainless family. The only difference is diameter (3/32 in) and package format (10 lb cardboard box). Polarity, position, and tensile properties are identical to the parent grade.

How many rods are in this 10 lb cardboard box?

Approximately ~90 rods. Exact count varies with manufacturing tolerance but a 10 lb cardboard box of 3/32 in Harris 316L Stainless typically contains in this range.

What is the shelf life if I do not use them all?

Sealed containers store indefinitely in a dry environment. Stainless SMAW electrodes are sensitive to moisture pickup; keep opened rods in a dry rod oven at 200-300 F and rebake per manufacturer instructions if exposed to humid conditions for extended periods.

What diameter should I use for common applications?

3/32 in is well-suited for root passes and thin stainless sheet in all positions. Heavier base metal and higher deposition typically calls for one diameter up; thinner sheet and root passes go one diameter down. See the parent grade page for full diameter-to-amperage guidance.

Can I mix this size with other diameters on the same job?

Yes, provided your procedure qualification (WPS) covers the diameter range. Many shops use one diameter for root, one for fill, and one for cap. All sizes within Harris 316L Stainless share identical mechanical properties (AWS A5.4/A5.4M E316L-15/-16/-17) so weld metal chemistry is consistent across passes.

Do I need to rebake these after the can is opened?

Recommended for code-quality stainless work. Keep opened rods in a heated rod oven at 200-300 F. If rods have been exposed to humid conditions for extended periods, rebake at the temperature specified on the manufacturer data sheet (typically 500-700 F).

Does this size require a special holder or stinger?

Use an electrode holder rated for the amperage range above (50-80 A). Most general-purpose stinger holders (e.g. 300-500 A class) handle 3/32 in Harris 316L Stainless without issue. For sustained high-amperage runs on larger diameters, a 500 A or higher holder is recommended.

Is this Buy America compliant?

This specific SKU is not the Buy America variant. Harris 316L Stainless may be available in a Buy America compliant version - see the parent grade page for all available compliance variants.
