Overview

The Harris AZ61A is a magnesium TIG welding filler rod — 3/32" diameter, 36" length, sold as a 3-lb box — designed for fusion welding of magnesium-base alloys to AWS A5.19 class AZ61A. It delivers clean, crack-resistant welds on magnesium structural components without flux when used under proper TIG shielding gas coverage.

Specifications

Compatible With TIG (GTAW) welding of magnesium-base alloys (AZ and EZ series)
AWS Classification AWS A5.19 Class AZ61A
Material Magnesium alloy (approximately 6% aluminum, 1% zinc)
Size / Dimension 3/32" (0.094") diameter × 36" length
Quantity per Pack 3-lb box
Application TIG welding of magnesium castings, aerospace frames, automotive components, and magnesium structural alloys
Recommended Applications
  • Aerospace and motorsport repairs: Welding magnesium gearbox housings, aerospace frames, and structural magnesium castings where weld integrity is critical.
  • Automotive restoration: Repairing vintage magnesium wheels, engine cases, and transmission covers found on classic and performance vehicles.
  • Industrial fabrication: Joining AZ31B, AZ61A, AZ80A, and similar wrought and cast magnesium alloys in structural and equipment applications.
  • Maintenance and repair operations (MRO): Filling cracks, porosity, or damage in magnesium castings where re-casting is not practical.
Compatibility / What It Fits

The Harris AZ61A rod is used with any TIG (GTAW) welding machine capable of AC or DCEP output suitable for magnesium. It is compatible with the following base material grades:

  • AZ31B — common wrought sheet and plate
  • AZ61A — extrusions and forgings
  • AZ80A — high-strength forgings
  • ZK60A — moderate-strength wrought alloy
  • AM60B and similar die-cast alloys (verify joint design for high-aluminium die-cast)

Argon shielding gas is required; helium additions may be used to increase heat input. No flux is needed for TIG processes. Use AC power for most magnesium TIG work to achieve the oxide-cleaning action needed on magnesium's surface oxide layer.
