Lincoln Electric CeramicElite™ Backing Tape (Flat Profile) is a high-performance ceramic backing solution for single-sided welding, engineered as a modern replacement for traditional copper backing across SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW processes. The ceramic tiles are bonded to an articulated aluminum adhesive tape that flexes to follow your part’s geometry, applies in seconds, and peels away cleanly after welding — helping fabricators achieve a consistent, smooth root profile and stronger first-pass results with less rework.
The flat profile features a rectangular groove that gives molten slag room to form and release during flux-cored operations, keeping the underside of the weld smooth while supporting full joint penetration. A red center alignment line runs the length of the tape so operators can quickly and visibly center the backing over the joint. Rated for use up to 600A, CeramicElite has very low moisture absorption and a high melting point, making it ideal for shipbuilding, tanks and pressure vessels, structural fabrication, and hard-to-reach welds where backside access is limited.
Sold by the box, each box contains 118.1 ft. of backing tape stored in humidity-controlled bags. Choose your groove width below (1/4 in., 3/8 in., or 1/2 in.) to match your joint.
- Flat profile with a rectangular groove — provides space for slag formation and removal in flux-cored applications while maintaining a smooth weld bead
- Rated for up to 600A — very low moisture absorption rate and a high melting point for demanding, high-current welding
- Improved productivity — increases deposit rate and ensures complete joint penetration without turning the workpiece for a back pass
- Easy to use — ceramic on an articulated, adjustable aluminum adhesive tape applies easily to the joint and detaches cleanly after welding
- Red center line — alignment line helps visibly center the backing tape on the welding joint
- A modern alternative to copper backing for SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW single-sided welding
- Available in 1/4 in., 3/8 in., and 1/2 in. groove widths — sold by the box (118.1 ft.), stored in humidity-controlled bags
