Overview
Lincoln Pipeliner 8P+ E8010-P1 — Overview

Lincoln Pipeliner 8P+ is a premium AWS A5.5/A5.5M E8010-P1 cellulosic SMAW electrode specifically engineered for the stringent demands of API 1104 pipeline welding on high-strength line pipe. The -P1 designator in AWS A5.5 indicates the electrode meets the enhanced toughness (CVN impact) requirements at low temperature that pipeline specifications demand for high-pressure service. Like all Pipeliner-series electrodes, 8P+ runs DC+ only with a fast-freeze, driving arc suited for all-position field welding including the all-critical vertical-down root pass. With 80 ksi minimum tensile strength, it is the choice fill and hot-pass electrode for X65 and higher-grade line pipe where the entire weld joint — not just the root — must meet API toughness requirements. WeldingMart stocks Pipeliner 8P+ as an authorized Lincoln Electric distributor.

Applications & Industries

Pipeliner 8P+ is used throughout cross-country pipeline construction and high-pressure oil and gas infrastructure:

  • API 5L X65 and X70 pipeline: Full-bead welding on high-strength line pipe where enhanced low-temperature toughness (-P1) is required by the weld procedure specification
  • Hot pass and fill passes: Bridges between the E6010 or E8010 root pass and any low-hydrogen cap passes, maintaining the all-cellulosic procedure where speed is critical
  • Offshore and arctic pipeline: Low-temperature toughness qualification makes 8P+ appropriate for arctic-grade pipeline projects
  • Mainline girth welds: Consistent mechanical properties for automated inspection (AUT) passes under API 1104 Annex A or B
  • Compressor and pump station piping: High-pressure station piping fabrication requiring certified weld procedures
Process Technology — How to Run Pipeliner 8P+
  • Power source: CC DC+ engine-driven or inverter (E8010-rated). OCV ≥ 70 V for reliable all-position starts.
  • Hot pass: Run immediately after root while the joint is still hot (350–500°F) to burn out any root pass gas pockets and fuse the root bead. Increase amperage 10–15% above root pass settings for hot pass.
  • Fill passes: Use stringer or narrow weave beads; avoid excessive weaving which can introduce lack-of-fusion in the tight pipeline bevel.
  • Vertical-down progression: Maintain tight arc, 15–20° push angle, controlled travel speed to avoid cold lap. The -P1 formulation supports the higher travel speeds used in production pipeline welding.
  • Preheat: Follow WPS per base metal CE. X65/X70 pipe with higher CE typically requires 100–200°F minimum preheat.
  • Interpass temperature: Do not exceed maximum interpass temperature specified in WPS — typically 400–500°F for pipeline work.
Storage & Handling

Pipeliner 8P+ is a cellulosic electrode — do not store in a drying oven. Cellulosic coatings require inherent moisture; baking will ruin arc performance:

  • Store sealed at ambient temperature (40–120°F / 4–49°C) in a dry location
  • Never bake or oven-dry Pipeliner electrodes — this is for low-hydrogen (E7018, E8018) electrodes only
  • Rods exposed to rain or excessive humidity should be air-dried only; severely wetted rods should be discarded
  • Reseal cartons after partial use; protect from jobsite moisture between shifts
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the -P1 designation mean on E8010-P1?
The -P1 suffix in AWS A5.5 designates that the electrode meets supplementary Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact toughness requirements at low temperature, specifically for pipeline applications. API 1104 and certain ASME Section IX procedures require the -P1 toughness classification for high-strength line pipe welding.
What is Pipeliner 8P+ used for?
Pipeliner 8P+ (E8010-P1) is used for hot pass and fill passes on high-strength pipeline (API 5L X65, X70) and for complete-joint welding on line pipe where the entire weld must meet enhanced low-temperature toughness requirements under API 1104 qualified procedures.
How does Pipeliner 8P+ compare to Pipeliner 7P+?
Both are cellulosic pipeline electrodes in the Pipeliner family. Pipeliner 7P+ (E7010-P1) deposits 70 ksi minimum tensile strength for X52 and X60 pipe applications; Pipeliner 8P+ (E8010-P1) deposits 80 ksi minimum for X65 and X70 pipe. Both include the -P1 toughness qualification. Select based on your WPS minimum tensile requirement.
Does Pipeliner 8P+ require oven storage?
No. Pipeliner 8P+ is a cellulosic electrode and must not be oven-dried. Store sealed at ambient temperature. Oven storage is only appropriate for low-hydrogen electrodes such as E7018 and E8018.
Can I use Pipeliner 8P+ for structural welding (AWS D1.1)?
Yes. E8010-P1 is pre-qualified under AWS D1.5 (bridge welding code) and can be procedure-qualified for AWS D1.1 structural applications on higher-strength steels. Confirm the electrode meets your base metal matching requirements per your WPS.
