The 'L' designation indicates an ultra-low carbon content (0.03% max) that minimizes sensitization — the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries — making it the preferred choice for welding Type 304L, 347, and related low-carbon stainless steels in corrosive service applications where post-weld annealing is not practical.
