The right torch tip starts with the job, not just a tip number. First choose the operation, then identify the torch and tip family, match the fuel gas, and use the manufacturer’s chart for the material thickness. Finally, confirm the listed pressures and hose requirements in the current equipment manual before setup.
- Choose the operation: hand cutting, machine cutting, welding or brazing, heating, gouging, or washing.
- Identify the torch: record the manufacturer, torch model, and the exact tip series or seat style it accepts.
- Match the fuel gas: select a series the manufacturer lists for acetylene, propane/natural gas, propylene, or another approved fuel.
- Match the work: use the exact series chart to find the tip size for the plate-thickness range.
- Verify the setup: check the required pressure at the torch, hose size, and equipment instructions before use.

How to Read a Cutting-Tip Chart
Read one row across, without borrowing a value from another series. For example, the Harris V1-101/V3-101 acetylene hand-cutting chart lists size 2 for 1- to 2-inch plate, 45–55 PSIG cutting oxygen, 8 PSIG acetylene, and a #53 cutting-orifice drill size. Those values apply to that stated series and row; they are not universal torch settings.
The manufacturer’s pressure values must be interpreted exactly as labeled. The Harris 6290 guide says the correct cutting-oxygen pressure must be available at the torch entry. Pressure losses, hose requirements, torch construction, and the equipment manual therefore matter; do not treat a chart value as a generic regulator setting.

Need a machine-only series? Shop machine cutting tips and use the matching machine chart. Do not transfer hand-cutting pressures, speeds, or preheat values into a machine setup.
Compatibility and Safe Selection Boundaries
- Do not select by tip number alone. Verify the torch model, accepted tip family or seat style, operation, and fuel gas.
- Do not mix rows across series. Thickness and pressure values belong to the named manufacturer table.
- Use the OEM’s pressure location. The Harris 6290 guide requires the correct cutting-oxygen pressure at the torch entry.
- Follow hose-size notes. The cited Harris charts specify 3/8-inch I.D. hose at stated larger tip sizes.
- Keep hand and machine charts separate. Some series have different construction, pressure, speed, and preheat instructions.
- For 6290 two-piece tips, Harris names E-9 tip cleaner; for single-piece tips, it names C-9. Brush along preheat slots, not across them, to avoid slot damage.
A manufacturer chart is a selection aid, not a substitute for the current torch, regulator, hose, and safety instructions. If the product page and current OEM manual do not confirm the combination, stop and verify before ordering or setup.
Shop by the Job
Choose cutting torch tips, heating torch tips, welding and brazing tips, machine cutting tips, or gouging torch tips. If compatibility is unclear, contact WeldingMart with the torch make and model, current tip number, fuel gas, operation, and work thickness before ordering.
If you need the torch rather than only a replacement tip, shop cutting torches. For a set that may include regulators, hose, handle, attachment, or tips, shop cutting torch kits and verify each kit’s included components.
Technical references: Harris V-Series tip chart, Harris 6290 cutting guide, Rev. E, and Harris tip-selection guidance. Verify against the current manufacturer document for your equipment.
Match the Tip to the Torch and the Job
A cutting-tip chart applies only to the named manufacturer series and conditions. Do not transfer cutting pressures to welding, heating, gouging, or rivet-washing work, and do not transfer hand-cutting settings to a machine setup. Confirm the torch model, tip family or seat style, fuel gas, operation, and work thickness on the product page and in the current OEM document before ordering.
For cutting, compare hand cutting tips and machine cutting tips. For other jobs, shop welding and brazing tips, heating tips, or gouging tips. Rivet-washing applications require a dedicated product such as the Harris 6290-5NFW or Harris 6290-8NFW; verify the exact application and torch compatibility before choosing either size.
Manufacturer pressure tables are selection references, not universal regulator settings or substitutes for the current torch, regulator, hose, and safety instructions. Stop and verify whenever the current product page and OEM manual do not confirm the same combination.
