PAPR stands for Powered Air-Purifying Respirator. Unlike a standard welding helmet that only protects your eyes and face from arc radiation and spatter, a PAPR helmet combines an auto-darkening filter with a blower unit that draws shop air through a filter cartridge and delivers it inside the hood — providing both eye/face protection and respiratory protection against welding fume. A standard helmet offers no fume filtration; a PAPR is the right choice when working in enclosed spaces or with base metals or coatings that generate hazardous fume (stainless steel, galvanized, manganese-heavy wires, etc.).
