Overview
Product Overview — Lincoln SuperArc LA-100 Low-Alloy MIG Welding Wire

SuperArc® LA-100 is Lincoln Electric's premium copper-coated, low-alloy solid MIG (GMAW) wire designed for use on 100,000 psi (690 MPa) tensile base material and on materials that require a minimum yield strength of 82,000 psi (565 MPa). It is classified to AWS A5.28 / A5.28M ER100S-G and also meets the requirements of ER110S-G, which makes it a single-wire answer for quenched-and-tempered plate work that would otherwise require two separate consumables. WeldingMart is an authorized Lincoln Electric distributor; every spool, coil, drum, and box ships factory-fresh in its original Lincoln packaging.

This page is the family hub for the LA-100 line. Lincoln publishes LA-100 in 0.035 in (0.9 mm), 0.045 in (1.1 mm), and 1/16 in (1.6 mm) diameters across 33 lb and 44 lb steel spools, 60 lb coils, the 500 lb Accu-Trak® drum, and the 500 lb Accu-Pak® box — every one of those formats is stocked here as an individual part-numbered listing, linked at the bottom of this page. Key Features
  • 100 ksi weld metal: Capable of producing welds with 690 MPa (100 ksi) tensile strength, matching the base material it is designed for rather than undermatching it.
  • Built for quenched and tempered steels: Lincoln specifically calls out excellent performance welding quenched-and-tempered steels and HY-80 base materials.
  • Full transfer-mode flexibility: Supports short-circuiting, globular, axial spray, and pulsed spray transfer, so one wire covers out-of-position root and fill work as well as high-deposition flat and horizontal passes.
  • Copper coating: Provides superior arc-starting characteristics and contributes to long contact tip life — meaningful on long production runs where tip changes are downtime.
  • Broad approval package: Carries AWS, ASME, ABS, CWB, military, and EN ISO conformances (listed below), which is what makes LA-100 usable on classification-society and government work.
Applications and Industries
  • HY-80 fabrication: Lincoln lists HY-80 base material as a primary application. This is the naval and pressure-hull grade family where undermatched filler is not acceptable.
  • Quenched and tempered plate: Named applications include ASTM A514, A543, A724, and A782 Q&T plate — the high-strength plate used in crane booms, heavy trailer frames, mining structures, and pressure components.
  • Military and defense low-alloy work: LA-100 conforms to MIL-100S-1 under MIL-E-23765/2 and T9074-BC-GIB-010/0200, which is the reason it appears on naval and defense weld procedure specifications.
  • Variable heat-input procedures: Lincoln notes the wire is suited to various heat input conditions, which matters when a single WPS must cover thin stiffeners and thick plate on the same assembly.
  • Heavy equipment and structural high-strength steel: Anywhere a 100 ksi tensile / 82 ksi minimum yield joint is specified and a solid wire process is preferred over flux-cored for cleanliness or automation reasons.
Polarity and Shielding Gas Requirements

SuperArc LA-100 runs on DC+ (DCEP). If you are coming off a self-shielded flux-cored wire that runs DC−, reverse the polarity connections at the machine before loading LA-100 or the arc will be unstable and the deposit chemistry will not be representative.

Lincoln publishes two shielding gas families for this wire, and the choice changes the mechanical result:

  • 75–95% Argon / balance CO₂: The general-purpose window. Lincoln's published typical results with 95% Ar / 5% CO₂ are 700 MPa (102 ksi) yield, 770 MPa (111 ksi) tensile, 21% elongation, and Charpy V-notch of 153–175 J (113–129 ft·lbf) at −51 °C (−60 °F). Higher CO₂ within the range increases penetration and spatter; higher argon smooths the arc and favours spray transfer.
  • 95–98% Argon / balance O₂: Spray-oriented mixes. Lincoln's published typical results with 98% Ar / 2% O₂ are 740 MPa (107 ksi) yield, 780–800 MPa (113–116 ksi) tensile, and 20% elongation.
  • Flow rate: 30–50 CFH for both families. Increase toward the top of the range for out-of-position work, draughty shop conditions, or larger nozzle diameters; verify with a flow meter at the nozzle, not just at the regulator.

Because the two gas families produce measurably different yield and tensile numbers, the gas used for procedure qualification must be the gas used in production. Do not qualify on 98% Ar / 2% O₂ and then run 75% Ar / 25% CO₂ in the shop.

Diameter and Package Selection Guide
0.035 in (0.9 mm) The smallest published LA-100 diameter. Lowest deposition of the three, so it is the choice when heat input has to be controlled on thinner Q&T sections or when out-of-position short-circuiting and pulsed work dominates. Stocked here as a 44 lb spool (EDS30778) and a 500 lb Accu-Trak® drum (ED031445).
0.045 in (1.1 mm) The workhorse diameter for this family and the widest package selection: 33 lb spool (ED031417), 44 lb spool (EDS30779), 60 lb spool (ED037360), 500 lb Accu-Pak® box (ED036608), and 500 lb Accu-Trak® drum (EDS01162). Suited to spray and pulsed spray production welding on heavy plate.
1/16 in (1.6 mm) Highest deposition of the three. Requires an industrial feeder and gun rated for the diameter, and is normally run in spray transfer in the flat and horizontal positions. Stocked here as a 60 lb spool (ED037358).

Package format notes. Spools (33 lb, 44 lb, 60 lb) suit conventional industrial feeders and cabinet machines. The 500 lb Accu-Trak® drum and 500 lb Accu-Pak® box are bulk formats for robotic cells and high-duty-cycle production, and they need the matching conduit and payoff hardware — a bulk package is not a drop-in substitute for a spool.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does ER100S-G mean?
It is the AWS A5.28 classification for LA-100. "ER" = electrode/rod, "100" = 100,000 psi (690 MPa) minimum tensile strength class, "S" = solid wire, and "G" = general classification, meaning the chemistry is as agreed between supplier and purchaser rather than fixed by the specification. Lincoln states LA-100 also meets ER110S-G, which carries a 760 MPa (110 ksi) minimum tensile requirement.
Can LA-100 be used on HY-80?
Lincoln lists HY-80 base material as a typical application for LA-100 and the wire carries MIL-100S-1 conformance under MIL-E-23765/2 and T9074-BC-GIB-010/0200. As always on HY-grade material, the governing document is your qualified weld procedure — preheat, interpass temperature, and heat-input limits are set there, not by the filler metal choice.
Which shielding gas should I use?
Lincoln publishes 75–95% Argon / balance CO₂ or 95–98% Argon / balance O₂ at 30–50 CFH. Argon/CO₂ mixes are the general-purpose choice across all transfer modes; the argon/oxygen mixes are used for spray transfer and produced slightly higher yield and tensile values in Lincoln's published testing. LA-100 is not self-shielded and must be run with gas.
Is LA-100 the same as SuperArc LA-90 or L-56?
No. L-56 is a mild-steel ER70S-6 wire in the 70 ksi class. LA-90 and LA-100 are low-alloy wires in higher strength classes. LA-100 is specifically designed for 100,000 psi (690 MPa) tensile base material and for materials requiring 82,000 psi (565 MPa) minimum yield, and it is classified ER100S-G / ER110S-G. Substituting between these classes changes the strength of the joint and is a procedure-qualification matter.
What polarity does LA-100 run on?
DC+ (DCEP), per Lincoln's published data. This is the standard polarity for gas-shielded solid MIG wire.
Which package do I need?
Conventional industrial feeders take the 33 lb, 44 lb, and 60 lb spools. The 500 lb Accu-Trak® drum and 500 lb Accu-Pak® box are bulk formats for robotic and high-volume cells and require the correct payoff and conduit. Check the arbor and spool outside diameter your feeder accepts before switching format.
Are certificates available?
Lincoln publishes lot documentation for its low-alloy consumables. Request the certificate for the exact part number at the time of order if your code, class society, or customer requires it with the weld records.
